An osprey face to face with the artist does, admittedly, have a comical aspect. These are the forward-staring yellow eyes of a predator.
The profile of the open beak displays the fearsome tearing mechanism of the butcher/fishmonger. Remember that the killing mechanisms are the bird's feet and talons.
Peculiarly, the osprey has a reticulating third talon to enable it to grasp its prey with four talons in apposition.
