Ospreys in nest

Pencil sketch

Ospreys in nest. Loch Garten

'Direct drawing' produces a detailed line the contained shapes of which can be modelled or 'filled in' later, but sometimes the working up happens immediately while the artist's eye is still on the subject (in this case, through a telescope).
In this way, all of the elements contained within the subject are viewed with the same perception so that bird, branch, nut, bolt and gaffer tape belong together naturally.
