African Painted Hunting Dog Sketches

Colour drawings of African Painted Hunting Dogs

It is little surprise that the Painted Hunting Dog prompts me to a colour rendering using Aquarelle pencils.
The Hunting Dogs of the Selous GR were the prime reason for visiting Selous Safari Camp (current name). We had only just arrived from Arusha via Dar Es Salaam when we were greeted with an invitation to drive to where a pack had been located and were thought to be denning. Of course, we accepted!

It is a peculiarity of the 'live' or 'direct' drawing method, that the more complex the subject's pattern is, the faster the eye perceives and the pencil draws its complexity.

On our arrival at the site, the dogs were fairly active, but soon lay down in the shade. When at rest, their athletic, rangy appearance vanishes and they resemble our familiar domestic pets to whom they are not closely related.

Although generally at rest, individuals would occasionally amble to others of the group and engage in a spot of social grooming.
